The dense and wonderfully lush forest at Ngezi is one of the last remaining areas of primary forest that once covered western Pemba. It’s notable in that it resembles the highland rainforests of East Africa more than the lowland forests found in Zanzibar. The 1476-hectare reserve is a true double canopy with an upper layer of Mgulele, Mwavi, Mtondoo and Mvule trees towering up to 40m high with lianas snaking between them providing swings for raucous monkeys. You’ll find the visitor center 4km west of Konde on the road to Ras Kigomasha.
Ngezi Forest in the north of Pemba is one of the last remaining indigenous forests and became a reserve in the 1950s. Once the forest covered the whole of Pemba and it is very similar to a rainforest. 50 m tall trees, eagles, Red Colobus Monkeys (indigenous to Zanzibar) and Pemba Vervet Monkeys and a heavenly ambience is what you get when walking around Here, besides in Wete, you can also find the Pemba Flying Fox– known for its fox colored fur, looks like a small dog actually. 95 % of its population is found on Pemba.
